Shelita King has been in healthcare for 25 years, first as a Registered Nurse, and for the last three years as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She earned her undergraduate degree from Southern University Baton Rouge and her graduate degree from Walden University.
Shelita explains her choice of profession like this: ”I have always had a heart for people, so I decided to shift this passion to healthcare.” What she likes most about her work is educating patients and putting a smile on their faces. At CenterWell, she is also enjoying the ability to spend quality time with patients, giving them time to express their feelings and concerns.
Prior to completing her visits, Shelita strives to ensure her patients fully understand their plan of care. As a Nurse Practitioner, her philosophy of care is rooted in evidence-based medicine, and the “Do unto others” Golden Rule are the words she lives by. Additionally, she believes that the “right” patient-provider relationship is based on respect and effective communication.
Before joining CenterWell in Denham Springs, Shelita worked for close to a year at Oak Street Health, a senior care facility, and at Upward Health Telehealth for about a year before that. Prior to Upward, she was at Southwest Primary, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), for about a year and a half. She reports that her experience working with the senior population as a Nurse Practitioner “has been absolutely rewarding” because of the smiles and hugs she’s received from her senior patients.
Shelita is happily married to her husband, who’s been a Senior Pastor for 23 years. She has a blended family, and is proudest of her three daughters and two grand babies. When she’s not working, she enjoys evangelism, reading the Bible and spending time with her family – including her little dog, Dax!
