Understanding male breast cancer: Why rarity doesn’t mean zero risk

If you’re a man, you may think it’s impossible to get breast cancer and that it only happens to women. You may be surprised to know that although breast cancer is more common in women, it can still occur in men. 

While breasts develop differently during puberty, men are born with a small amount of breast tissue where cancer can form. Male breast cancer accounts for less than 1% of all cases, with a lifetime risk of about 1 in 755.¹ That risk increases as men age, with most cases diagnosed in men over age 50 and specifically between ages 60 and 70.¹

Although it’s rare, male breast cancer is still possible, which is why it’s worth understanding the signs, symptoms and what to watch for to protect your health. 

The signs: What older men should watch for

• Common physical changes: Check under your nipple or in the armpit for a firm, usually painless lump.
• Skin and nipple alterations: Watch for skin dimpling, puckering, redness or scaling.
• Nipple-specific symptoms: Look for clear or bloody nipple discharge and nipples that begin to pull inward.

Because men aren't typically screened for breast cancer they are often diagnosed at more advanced stages, which could be extremely dangerous. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider about it.

Knowing your risk: Genetics, hormones and health history

Breast cancer in men may be rare, but it’s important to know your risks. There are many factors that increase the risk of male breast cancer, including:²

• Genetic mutations: Having a family history of breast cancer, especially in a parent, or inheriting a breast cancer gene 1 (BRCA1) or BRCA2 mutation.
• Hormonal imbalances: Having high estrogen levels, which can result from liver disease, obesity or certain hormone therapies.
• Testicular conditions: Having a history of orchitis (inflamed testicles) or had a testicle surgically removed (orchiectomy).
• Klinefelter syndrome: Being born with more than 1 copy of the X chromosome, which affects the development of the testicles and changes the balance of hormones.
